@ArcticMoon Well, you don't lose functions essential to operate the screenreader efficiently

And besides, the screen reader from Microsoft, called Narrator, functions very well without Internet; of course, only with Windows 10 or later.

Well, since I have no experience with ZDSR's function loss, I'm not against it of course. Yeah narrator is a thing that I wouldn't use for anything different than setting up windows, it's so limited.

Not anymore! Since Windows 10, it improved quiet a bit. It's good for all the Microsoft products as well as their Web browsers. It works even reasonably well when using Zoom.

#505

I know what it's like since I had to use it for doing basic stuff a lot, but compared to other screenreaders it reacts slower and the built in voices are very low quality.

Well, I don't know about these voices. To me, the quality seems very good for me. I'm talking about the Windows Kor 1 voices. I find Narrator not slow at all; depending what you are doing. Maybe you may have to adjust a few things.

#507

Yeah, I was referring to the built in microsoft voices. They are pretty bad compared to what we have in jaws or NVDA, both screenreaders are much more responsive.

Of course. I'm using narator just to run nvda on freshly installed windows, although, sometimes even that isn't required.

#509

I used narrator for nearly 2 years without using NVDA. I stopped using it because it began to freeze on random sites on edge chromium. It was working quite fine otherwise.
The method of operation is a little bit different from NVDA, but the user guide explains everything in a very simple way, even a person who is not fine with tech could understand it

#510

But there's no way of expanding it's functionality as I know. one big downgrade

#511

I don't know about that, but I used for nearly 2 years, that's what I'm gonna say here. Don't misunderstand me, I don't want to start an argument or a debate here, I'm just stating my opinion.

One cool thing about Narrator is that it can be brought up on the boot screen. That saved my old computer as Windows needed to be repaired and it would only do it there on the boot screen. I found the appropriate button, started the process and the computer is functioning again.
Strange, Troubled Times...

#513

No, we just discussing/expresing opinions, personaly me I don't like debates and trying to avoid them. :)

#514

Agree with you here. Oh, how kind I am! Even to you.

Most screenreaders don't require an internet connection all the time... What if someone doesn't have internet connection somewhere but at the same time they don't have a dongle either? If someone pays 26 dollars a year to have 2 eyes, it's a minimum to have those eyes at all situations.

The problem is not NVDA's breaking compatibility with add-ons, and not even that becoming regular. The problem is the latest updates having nothing remarkable, other than the need to wait for compatible versions of most of the add-ons that I use every time I update NVDA.
-- (thespyde):
Now that more and more add-ons are becoming compatible with the latest NVDA, I don't see any loss of functionality in it. Some people gripe about NVDA breaking add-ons, seemingly on a regular basis, but really, the developers have no choice but to keep pace with Python, both to keep it compatible as older versions of Python become unsupported, and to port new features into NVDA as that becomes possible.

I'm not sure what else I can say about this current version, other than it's still very responsive, snappy! It does all I need it to, and then some!

Well got it. But do you lose only the functions that definitely require an Internet connection to work, or some screen-reader related offline ones as well?

Narrator could still be used for a bunch of tasks if you sacrifice some time and practicality. I have not used it that much but do know that it has improved a lot.
Yes, Apple develops VoiceOver and ethically speaking, Microsoft should actually distribute its operating system with a screen reader of its own, but why do that when there are so many alternatives, including free ones like NVDA?
See? I am responding kindly to you again. More kindly than you deserve.

I use jaws for most thing. However, I find that NVDA works better for some sebsites and a few programs I have installed.

I found narrator works a whole lot better with the task manager than NVDA.
