Ofcourse, I also didn't some years ago those things.
Also, in Slovakia We know flute, as this transverse and recorder. But for normal people, who are not educated in music those are flutes.
There are various classifications and It is sometimes difficult to compare English classifications of various things (not just musical instruments) and Slovak classifications.

Sorry for those many posts, but It is maybe same, as Mbira or Kalimba. There are some differences, but also african Ngonamombes, Mbiras, Likembes and western Kalimbas are simply known as Thumb piano.
I know some people, who called ukulele 'balalayka', or 'tamburica', sometimes guitar, because they don't know those differences, althought those musical instruments are identical.
But, this is about another topic those comparatifs. I don't know, that It is good to do those things here.

In Polish we call recorder "flet prosty" and western concert flute "flet poprzeczny". "Poprzeczny" means transverse, and "prosty" means... I'm lacking a better word for that: straight.

Ofcourse, It is similar, as in our language, but prosty is similar to slovak word prostý, which means something, like plain.

It's different in english as well, the smaller one which has holes is a recorder and the normal one is a flute :D in hungarian it's furulya and fuvola.
