Server and server provider

Greetings, here everyone who is interested can exchange about servers such as VPSs, or even home servers if you wish, but you might also start a seperate topic if there is to much clutter here.
To get started and maybe continue a constructive discussion from the crappy place around the corner, I am currently at UpCloud, my vps with 2cpu 2GB ram and I think 50 or a bit more GB costs about 14 usd, but I pay 10usd/m because it get's paid hourly and you basically have credit on your account you can just bump up with a 1 time payment if you need. So I just have a little bit of money floating there constantly basically.
Was at Contabo for 1 and, well, probably 7/8 months, windows server worked amazing, domain was overpriced af and I'd recommend porkbun for such domain stuff to everyone at this point.
Then in the last 2 months there I had severaal Linux servers, one was to expensive so I canceled it, and the other started to completely fuck up, went down on weekends, the customer control pannel would just say unexpected maintenance without any further info. Eventuaally the server returned in the middle of the week. This got annoying so I made the switch thanks to Matthews referal code. I appreciate it still :)

So, enough about me, what about you? Do you have a server, which provider are you at, what do you do with it?

I'll have to look into porkbun, thanks for the reminder. I keep forgetting about it! I've been saying I'm going to get my own for what feels like a thousand years, so.
Even if the darkness grows too deep, even if it looks impossible. You are never alone. You are never forgotten. Remember that.

In 2023 and a bit of 2024, I was at dsh, a little German server company selling a Windows server with 3 gb of ram, 2 cores and 250 gb storage and a Windows license for $7.65 a month. However, as time passed by, the server used to crash more frequently and it was occuring partly a few times in 2 weeks which is really a shame. Finally when I had enough, I opened a support ticket and got an answer that was not really satisfying. At the end I switched to
Contabo. I have learned how to use Ubuntu and bought a server for $5.36 which features 6 gb ram, 400 gb ssd and cores. I was already amazed since the first day I have been using this, and I never had to call the customer service, neither did it crash.
Regarding homeservers, I have thought about turning my old computer which is still quite ok as such turning into a homeserver. However, I think there are a few things I gotta learn first, and I have to go through the files and go sure there is really nothing I will miss anymore.
And when someone is interesting in what I'm hosting, currently it is a Gitea instance, NVDA remote server, Caddy and some other stuff I probably forgot about. And well, the most of you can probably imagine what I have been doing on my old server.

I use Endoffice. $39 monthly for 8 cores, 32 GB ram and a 1 TB SSD. Very nice so far, hasn't crashed or anything ever.

For smaller things I would recommend Linode. More expensive than Endoffice but it all just works.

May I ask why you're paying, how much is it? 16usd if I'm not wrong, for 24GB ram? Like, that's more than most laptops come with and why exactly would you need that on a server. I can run a Nextcloud, NVDA Remote, TT Server and web server stuff on 2GB ram. I don't know if you guys are aware what programs you run consume and what you really need. Sure, sounds cool, but I'll just say #Overselling once again.
Also no issues so far? Since when do you even use it? If you've pourchased it yesterday that's no wonder :p

We all know your opinion on Contabo now, there is no need to express it in every of your message imho.

Since when have I talked about contabo in that message? It was a general question addressed to the user khalil2009, not to you. This opinion is the same for any server provider which oversells, not only for contabo.

Hi guys! Using UpCloud for a week and it goes well.
Of course it is not a time when talking about servers, but I use them for VPN stuff and I'm happy with the current service quality.
They support custom OS images and cloud init scripts, so it is very comfortable and fast to set up any amount of vpn servers in any locations.
IP addresses expensive a bit, I can purchase much cheaper ones at ovh.. hmhm, I cannot, but I could if they don't bitch at my account.
But anyways it is accessible enough for comfortable use and as I see they don't oversell. At least my prometheus scrapper doesn't show any cpu steal for this week of use.

Dude I love them. Had contact with an employe over reddit recently and he just gave me 25€ credit for basically informing him about an issue with the subreddit. Amazing people.

This is what called a company which is loyal to its customers.

That does actually sound like a proper plan, feel free to tell us about your experience.

lol you know that that is more than Contabo offers for the same price right? That basically proofs that you do not think it's overselling and just hate it due your personal problems you've experienced at them.

Jonathan

1. If I'm not wrong Matthew uses them too, and unless with you I do actually think he has a plan what he's doing, and 2, I haven't even looked at the loser company plans. Bring an actual prove or be quite.

welp. they told me that I have to make 3 months minimum payment for them to put the server up. which is about 90 dollars. which I cant, nore do I want to, pay in 1 day right now. so I'm sticking with what I have for a wile
