They can indeed engage with the community. It seems you weren't here yet in 2022, I could have shown you great examples.

When someone is globally banned fom elten they can not engage with the community in any manne that make sense for, for example, a spammer.

I agree with post 14, and I made that point a few weeks ago. Notice that all of the impersonation accounts magically stopped after Nathan44 got banned from Elten globally?
All that I survey, I could easily destroy. From time to time, it is important to remind these small creatures of the true extent of my power.

Regarding dashs point about the administration arguing to much.
Yes, transparency is needed. And my best example frm this is also from elten. Without going into to much detail, we had a situation in the english community where deleting posts was heavily abused by the admin team of this community to limmet visibility of something that was posted. When we asked why it was deleted they made soe claims but couldn't verify them at all as the post was nowhere archived that we could view it, so we jus had to believe them, and this is a situation you don't want to put your self in as administrator. And even admins or mods can make wrong decisions,,. So discussions about admin decisions are in fact, something really important. And if you just lock down every topic that might end up in a discussion it will just make people create new topics, so won't help in any way. It's also ambiguus to say that an admin can not be a popular person, as this is very well possible.
I guess some of these points are depended on someones personal views and are not able to be generalized, this is just my stance on them as moderator of the elten english community.

Oh and btw, I don't exactly know what spam incident you mean, but if you mean the time where a user just ent on an "a" "a" "a" spray these have been deleted by now, same for the one were a user was spamming insults on Pajper. Regarding users that reacted to trolls beeing warned, to be completely honest i have no idea to which case you are refering here, sinc this was not logged in the administration logs and i have not been as active as i would have liked to be in the past weeks. How ever a general statement, if you are talking to a troll, of course the same rules as when you are talking to a normal user apply. Example, someone spams and another someone gives the spammer a personal attack. Spammer would be banned, but the other person would get a warning due to a personal attack. If you start making contextual exceptions then people would want them for all kind of stuff.

All I'm going to say is this is a low blow.
Let the stars be your guide. Let your mind just relax. And when in doubt, meditate.

Can't they write private messages?

Except for the fact that he's not banned globally anymore.

Nice update, and thanks Pajper for all you do with the program. It's nice to know that soon Elten will be cross-platform on Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android so no one will be left out. Mac and Linux users won't have to set up VMs anymore to use the program once it becomes available.

I think he is still globally banned, just elten3 has an issue with these apparently. When i look at it from windows, which still runs elten2, he stil shos as globally banned. Regarding pm's as globally banned, I remember an older changelog entry that detailed what was possible if you were globally banned and i don't remember pm beeing one of them. I might be wrong at that one though.

It's one of these few things they can do. May you, please, read about a phenomenon called shadow banning?

Um, i don't understand how shadow banning is related to this matter. Shadow banning would mean that they can also still do everything, including posting to the forums, just that it's only visible to hem. Is that how it's handled?

Yes and no. If they are forbidden to use almost all functionalities, but they're not deprived of using the programme itself, it makes them bored, so they stop making noise after some time. In Polish Community it worked perfectly some time ago.

Well then I was right and banning has no purpose. Because they can continue spamming in private.

That is what the blacklist is for. :) Elten is a communicator for many users and even if we do not approve their public behaviour, it is not fair to forbid them to write PMs. Firstly because they often find Elten the most effective source of communication, secondly - it takes almost all their weapons out, especially if we, users, add them to the blacklist.

Not quite, as you can just blacklist people and creating new accounts is probably not one of the things they can still do when globally baned. Granted, i don't get how this is related to shadowbanning either.

I'm wondering what evidence you've got, because we, users, didn't even notice you globally banned people. It's not even logged anywhere.

Could you, please, read my post carefully? :) I even did not have to in the aforementioned case.

I will write more tomorrow, but just a small explanation as for now.
In account settings you can find an option to prevent globally banned users from writing you private messages, enabled by default.

@27, I just got the opportunity to read your post.
No, I don't leave spam posts for people to see. The posts that are genuinely spam, as in the cookie Crumble ones, I either deleted them or moved them to the archive.
As for the threat of warning users who engaged, I believed then, and still believe now, that everyone has a part to play in the peace and stability of the forum. Trolls thrive on attention. The more people engaged with theguy, the more he trolled. That was a thread for introducing new users, not complaining about the troll.
Notice that after I made the threat, the thread went back to it's intended purpose and the troll stopped posting shortly after?
Yeah my methods may be different and strange, but I think they're working. We haven't had this much relative peace since early 2025.
Maybe treating your users like mentally challenged children may work for the Polish community, but it has been shown, repeatedly, that it doesn't work here. The most peaceful periods of the forum were when we had no moderation at all, and now. People like to be treated like equals. People like to be respected. Once you give them that respect they will act accordingly.
From time to time, action will have to be taken in serious circumstances, but until then, people should be given the benefit of the doubt.
This is the Elten English Community. Not the Jaidon Network. Not the Holy Empire of Karmien, nor the Grand Duchy of Arctic Moon. It's a *COMMUNITY*. A community functions when everyone buys into the community. if you treat people like they're temporary guests or visitors, then, what are they buying into?
We
tried the model outlined in post 27, and it has clearly failed. Let's do what works for us

You don't seem to be happy with any of the laid-out solutions, so let me ask you: how would you like to do it?
Come on, be a little constructive rather than just bashing everything.
When we prevent the user from doing all the things, parts of which they might even have paid for, such as expanding the attachment size or voice message length, we are illegally taking those features away from them.
But if we don't, well, banning is useless anyway.
So, what's your solution then? I think we're all open to new ideas.
