Powerlang, a feature-rich language learning tool

Ever felt that frustrating cycle of learning a new word one day, only to have it vanish from your memory a week later?
That was me. My friend and I started a language-learning journey together—she's tackling Dutch, and I'm learning Swedish. We were using notebooks, random apps, and books, but nothing stuck. The tools were either too generic, too cluttered, or didn't focus on the words we actually needed to learn.
We realized the problem: we weren't just learning a language; we were building a personal vocabulary. We needed a tool that was as personal as our own notebooks but as smart as a modern app.
So, we, with the help of Gemini, built one.
I'm excited to share a project born from this need: Powerlang. It’s a simple, free, desktop application I created to solve our exact problem. It’s not just another flashcard app; it's a complete system designed to help you discover, save, and master the words that matter to you.
What Makes Powerlang Different?
Powerlang is built on a few core ideas that any serious language learner will appreciate:
You Own Your Data: Your word lists are your own. Everything is stored locally on your computer in a simple database. You can create multiple "dictionaries" for different topics (like "Swedish Nouns" or "Dutch Restaurant Phrases") and even export them to a simple CSV file to edit or back them up.
Intelligent Learning with SRS: The heart of Powerlang is its Spaced Repetition System (SRS). Instead of quizzing you randomly, it intelligently tracks how well you know each word. It then shows you the words you're about to forget at the perfect moment. This is the most efficient, scientifically-proven way to move vocabulary into your long-term memory.
A Seamless Workflow: Discovery is part of learning. Powerlang's Online Translator lets you look up a word in a dozen languages. But here’s the best part: with a single click, you can take that new translation and instantly add it to your personal database to be included in your next study session.
Practice How You Want:
Review Due Words: The main, most efficient way to study.
Practice Quiz: A 20-question quiz with a "retry" round for the words you get wrong.
Simple Flashcards: A quick way to flip through a random set of words.
Pronunciation Practice: Type any text, and built-in Text-to-Speech will read it aloud, helping you perfect your accent.
Built for Learners, by Learners
The project is absolutely free, ,firstly because of it being not only my work, but AI also took part in coding, and secondly, because we believe, that such tools should be free for everyone.
If you're a language learner who wants to take control of your vocabulary, I invite you to try Powerlang. You can download the latest release directly from my GitHub.
