Indeed, with my post I meant cracks aren't allowed generally. Since I'm not an old-time gamer myself, sadly, I can't really say anything about if an old project was abandoned or not, regarding these things my judgements are based on what I know and what others told me. That's why I diden't take this to a really serious level, because even if moderators need to judge, sometimes we aren't sure either.

Go to agarchive.net and you will find such patches, or cracks, or whatsoever you call them, for severl unsupported games.
So, as far as I know, there are two possibilities:
1. The developer decides to no longer support one particular game, but continues to work on other projects.
2. The developer either quits supporting all of their complete and ongoing projects, or disappears entirely.
And I suppose that such cracks do become legal in the second case.
