As far as Jaws cost, well, as far as i pointed it for myself, jaws is more like a professional screen reader which can be used for example in accessibility testing in addition to nvda. I know someone who uses Jaws for accessibility testing. For me nvda is enough and as a beginner in accessibility testing, I will go with it, I won't reject jaws as a choice, I believe it's a choice for a really special case where nvda isn't really enough.
Well, people are also using NVDA in the accessibility testing, especially when it comes to websites, but this is not the topic we are talking about the speech synthesizers. Acapela speaks over 30 langs, and yes, they are extending the portfolio. When it comes to the speech synthesizers, i like how RHVoice is developed. Soon, there will be the macedonian language and voice available. I've heard the sample, and i can say, that it's the best when it comes to reading and interpretation. I am using it also for russian, and in my opinion, there is no better synth than RHVoice. Vocalizer sometimes have crappy pronunciation, not only for polish, but for russian and croatian languages, too.
O wow! RH voice russian! Alexandr is fabulous! Reminds me of my accordion teacher :D I guess we can talk about the other stuff in the screen readers thread then.
There are also new voices, downloadable from the RHVoice github repo, and yes, the voices are available for the new release of NVDA, which is 2021 beta 2!

By the way, acapela has released a pack of new voices, there is a new Russian voice. I heard the sample and it's amazing. Unfortunately it is not available in nvda and voiceDream yet.
I am referring to the new russian and english voices, created by the RHVoice lab.

Well the giant effect is because there's no MBrola database defined for the voice. The rate is decreased to 16000 HZ, but using the normal ESpeak voice, so yeah. I recently made the Spanish MBrola 1 voice speak greek by modifying its PHTrans file a bit. It sounds great! Greek and Spanish have very similar accents. Of course, completely different words but the accent is very similar, even the same depending on the speaker.
-- (zvonimirek222): It is a backend which allows to run Mbrola with espeak on sapi. Some of these voices with espeak sound very giant-like, for example the greek one.
