The reason why YouTube downloads don't work is because YouTube changed their API's last year, so everything that used YouTube DL basically died. Depending on when Universal Downloader was last updated, it probably won't use the newer YouTube DLP.

can't you just replace the youtube dl exe with the ytdlp? I think it sends the same commandline arguments which should still work I assume?

You can do it. Just replace with new yt dlp version. You can download it on official page located at Github.
